Jersey City Watch Jersey City, Hudson County October 2, 2006
Many historians believe Jersey City to be the birthplace of New Jersey. The state's first permanent settlement was established there in 1660. Dutch handprints are all over the history of this city, including "Peg Leg" Pete, who authorized the charter for what was then called the Village of Bergen. The city is also home to the longest continuous congregation and the oldest continuous site for a school, where New Jersey's first licensed teacher served as headmaster. Much of the documentation, a lot of it in Dutch, is housed in the New Jersey Room at the Jersey City Free Public Library.
