WHAT IS THE READY TO LEAD IN LITERACY SERVICE?

CPB's Ready to Lead In Literacy Service (RTLL) provides a unique contribution to the nation's goal that all children start school "ready to learn." It is an unprecedented blending of services; the full lineup of PBS children's series -- the quality, educational, nonviolent, noncommercial programming that parents have trusted for two generations; program breaks delivering educational messages; and a variety of outreach services and materials for parents, teachers and other caregivers of children ages birth through 8.

NJN launched its Ready To Learn service in 1998, and since then has provided 419 workshops for teachers and parents/caregivers, participated in 48 community events, served 2,528 parents, 1,160 teachers and 40, 863 children, and distributed 49,630 free books.

With CPB’s RTLL funding, NJN enhances education services on air, online and in the community. NJN offers parent and teacher workshops to compliment NJN’s regional teacher training institutes that build on the current 9.5 hours of PBS Kids weekday programming. These initiatives strengthen online services and reach targeted communities to provide outreach to parents and teachers.

Sources of help and information are: PBS.org, PBS Parents, PBS Kids, PBS Teachers, and Reading Rockets.

OUTREACH
RTLL supports parents, teachers and caregivers in using PBS Programs to help children love learning. The service promotes partnerships between PBS stations and community organizations, such as child-care centers, schools, libraries, businesses, civic groups and governmental agencies, to enable adults to receive the training and materials that extend the programs' educational impact. Workshops are being offered through the regional and local libraries. For more information about RTLL workshops and for referral to where a workshop is being held, please contact Trina Pryor at 609-777-5081 or via email at tpryor@njn.org.
